American Composers of the 20th Century
Each month Andy Kahn will lead a fascinating interactive discussion on the lives and music of legendary 20th century American composers. Andy will play pieces from the composers and encourage class participation. Sing along or simply listen for your entertainment pleasure!

Book and Film
In the comfort of your home, read a short work of fiction and watch a movie based on that reading. Come to class to discuss the reading, the film, and the interpretations of each. Books can be located in libraries, bookstores, and online book sources. Films can be rented on Prime Video, YouTube, or Apple TV.
June: As an homage to Rob Reiner, read the Stephen King novella “The Body,” paired with “The Body” film adaptation Stand By Me.
July: The 1987 play Fences by August Wilson, paired with the 2016 film of the same name.
August: The 2000 Philip Roth novel The Human Stain, and the 2003 film of the same name.

Great Decisions
Great Decisions is a program of the Foreign Policy Association, the aim to increase awareness of international issues with the American public. The class will evaluate significant issues facing American foreign policymakers. Each topic considers the historical, current relevance, and strategic value to the United States.

The Short Stories of Sholem Aleichem
Known as the ‘Jewish Mark Twain,’ Sholem Aleichem wrote humorous stories and novels about life in small-town (shtetl) Eastern Europe before World War II. His stories inspired the play Fiddler on the Roof. We will read and discuss three or four stories each class session.

“Sinatra 101” is an overview of the man and his music. The course identifies his early vocal influences, then follows his career on records, stage, screen, and television: His big band days, the Columbia Record years as idol of the bobbysoxers, the career downturn and astounding comeback, and the Capital and Reprise Records years.

World War II: Causes, Combat, and Victory for the Allies
This course provides a chronological overview of World War II, covering its causes and the major campaigns in the European and Pacific theaters (1939-1944). Topics include Nazi Germany's early triumphs, the attacks on the Soviet Union and Pearl Harbor, key battles like Midway and Stalingrad, campaigns in the Mediterranean, D-Day, and concluding with the Allied victories, the fall of Japan, and the use of the atomic bombs.

Yiddish
The main goal of this class is conversational immersion in Yiddish, "mameloshen" ('mother tongue'). We will also discuss the origins and development of the language, and students are encouraged to bring music to use as a basis for learning. Shoshana Levin is the only child of Holocaust survivors, born in Haifa, Israel, and grew up in Toronto, Canada. Her first language was Yiddish. Shoshana has been a member of the local Yiddish club for over 20 years.
It is helpful to obtain a copy of The Modern Yiddish/English Dictionary by Uriel Weinrich
